Moisture Mapping Unearths Moisture Content in Wood

Wood Moisture Content

Wood moisture content refers to the amount of moisture found within wood. It is crucial in determining wood’s structural integrity and performance. Proper moisture content ensures optimal wood stability and prevents issues such as warping, cracking, and fungal growth.

What is the Moisture Content in Wood?

Wood moisture content is expressed as a percentage indicating the ratio of water weight to the weight of dry wood. Measuring moisture content establishes the moisture level, which falls into three categories:

  • Green: Freshly cut wood with high moisture content (more than 30%).
  • Air-dried: Wood exposed to open air until its moisture content stabilizes between 12-15%.
  • Kiln-dried: Wood subjected to controlled heat to remove moisture content to desired levels, often below 8%.

Accurate moisture mapping provides vital information about wood’s suitability for intended applications. It helps identify moisture sources, prevent decay, and ensure longevity in various woodworking projects.
